Background
The Seattle Film Institute, founded in 1994, offers the largest film program in the Northwest.
Our program is well-known for both the small size of our classes and our commitment to hands-on education. The faculty members of the Seattle Film Institute are not only dedicated teachers but they are also experienced professionals in their chosen fields. The large inventory of equipment provided by the Seattle Film Institute means that from Final Cut Pro to Arriflex cameras, students have access to all the tools they need to produce professsional quality results.
The Seattle Film Institute is centrally located in the Capitol Hill area of Seattle and is less than 10 minutes from downtown.
The SFI Mission
To provide students with the knowledge, skills, tools, and experience that are needed:
- To pursue a career in the motion picture industry
- To follow their own creative path as independent filmmakers or screenwriters
- To furnish a foundation in filmmaking for work in digital video or on the web
SFI Success Stories
Some of our students pursue careers in the motion picture industry:
Billy McMillin
Since attending The Seattle Film Institute, Billy McMillin has worked as a camera assistant and set lighting technician on a number of major motion pictures and television shows including "The Fugitive", "Steven King's Rose Red", and "Get Carter". He's also worked on a slew of indie features including "Disco Boys", "Money Buys Happiness", and "Silence". Most recently Billy won the award for Best Documentary Editing at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival for the documentary "Iraq in Fragments".
Some follow their own creative paths as filmmakers or screenwriters:
Meg Richman
Meg Richman directed and wrote the screenplay for her first feature, "Under Heaven", which garnered critical and audience acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival. She's currently poised to direct her second feature, "Grace", also from a screenplay that she wrote.
"The one and only Screenwriting class I ever took was from David Shulman. From the script I wrote in that class I got an agent and began my professional career."
Renate Anderson
Renate Anderson has completed three short 16mm films - "Gimme the Trouble", "Lots of Money", and "Teepee Fire Squaws", since taking classes at the Seattle Film Institute.
"The classes I took at Seattle Film Institute gave me the confidence and tools so I could make my own films from beginning to end. Also, I met many people in the classes who had similar interests and they ended up working on my films."
Other students also use filmmaking skills for work in digital video, new technologies and on the web.
Cy Foughty
Cy Foughty recently started his new job for Nortel Networks as Director of Architecture/Emerging Service Provider. He acts as a liason with the entertainment industry and specializes in interactive television and new technologies for film production.
"I wouldn't have been prepared for my current position without the knowledge I gained from the Seattle Film Institute. Because of SFI, I'm not only effective at what I do but I also have credibility that cant be made up or manufactured."
