Billy Wilder was one of Hollywood's greatest directors, and one of its remarkable stories.
After working in Vienna and Berlin as a journalist, he broke into the German film industry as a a screenwriter. Fleeing the rise of Nazism, Wilder ended up working in Hollywood with the help of friends.

As a writer and director, he demonstrated a witty, dark, and perceptive comprehension of America, its people and its cinema. Working in several genres and getting commanding performances from top actors, Wilder created such memorable films as Ace in the Hole, The Apartment, Double Indemnity, The Lost Weekend, Sabrina, Some Like It Hot, Sunset Boulevard, Witness for the Prosecution, and many more. This course will examine Wilder's work, the major and the minor films, in appreciation of his impressive career.
