Since its birth, cinema has always shared a close if occasionally antagonistic relationship with opera.
1908 film of Donizzetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor Although sometimes regarded as opera's rival and replacement, cinema has frequently drawn its stories and talent from the world of opera, while, in turn, opera composition and staging have moved in distinctly more cinematic directions. This course is an exploration of the shared history of these two multimedia art forms from the silent era to the digital age.
The role of music in opera, no matter how extended, is governed finally by the needs fo the drama. So it is with the best film music. It identifies itself with the action, and becomes a living part of the whole. --Bernard Hermann
