Hands-on Filmmaking I provides a practical foundation for filmmaking skills - lighting, camera, composition and editing. Students obtain a hands-on overview of the whole production process from the initial idea stage through to final editing. Class members complete individual projects in Super-8 film. These projects give students experience in the whole production process including scripts and storyboards, shooting, and editing. Class time is devoted to film analysis, technical knowledge, and screening and critiques of student work. Tuition includes the text, the first roll of film and processing, and use of cameras and editing equipment. Additional film costs and refundable equipment deposit are the responsibility of the student. This class can be taken on its own or as the first step in the Hands-on Filmmaking Production Program.

Weekly class sessions cover, among many subjects, scripting, shot lists and storyboards, budgeting, location scouting, permit procedures, casting, and art direction. An instructor will accompany each group on their first shooting day. All footage is carefully analyzed and critiqued in class. Access to the camera and lighting package are provided through course fees. All film and processing costs are included in the lab fee. Other costs associated with production and the refundable equipment deposit are the student's responsibility.

When the picture is complete, students build sound tracks combining music, sound effects, and voice-over. This class stresses intensive film editing theory and hands-on instruction on professional editing equipment. Each stage of the editing process involves an in-depth critique and analysis. Editing time and access to tape recorders for collecting sound effects are provided through course fees. The lab fees cover sound transfers, editing supplies, and the costs of a video transfer for the music composer. All the costs associated with obtaining a release print of a film are the responsibility of the students.
